A notorious “merchants of death” people-smuggling gang has been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after being convicted of facilitating the illegal transportation of migrants in extremely perilous conditions. The gang, which operated in a complex network spanning multiple countries, exploited vulnerable individuals seeking better lives in Europe by charging them exorbitant fees to smuggle them across borders, often at the cost of their safety and well-being.
The gang’s operations involved overcrowded and poorly maintained vehicles, often using hidden compartments and covert routes to evade authorities. Many of the migrants they smuggled were subjected to inhumane conditions during their journeys, which sometimes lasted days or even weeks, without access to proper food, water, or sanitation. Some of these migrants were forced to travel in sealed shipping containers, exposing them to suffocating heat and, tragically, in some cases, death due to heatstroke or lack of oxygen.
